Community Programs offers Adapted Recreation for children in the areas of inclusive kickball, adapted aquatics, and gymnastics.

Inclusive Kickball

Inclusive Kickball is a seven-session open recreation format that introduces the game and emphases the fundamentals for children with and without disabilities. We want to make sure the children have fun in a relaxing environment. Participants will learn the rules, develop skills, meet new friends, stay active, and have fun! This program is for children aged 5-12; however, we encourage siblings and parents to join the fun as well! Younger children, as well as children with disabilities, will benefit from adult presence since this is not a 1:1 program. Any siblings or caregivers over the age of 13 will be able to participate free of charge.

Adapted Aquatics

All aquatic classes will take place at the RPAC Aquatic Center. The state-of-the-art instructional pool has an adjustable depth so that even the tiniest of tots can stand on the bottom. All lessons are taught in the same area for the convenience of parents with more than one child.

Children's Adapted Aquatics
Children's Adapted Aquatics (CAA) follows the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim guidelines. This curriculum teaches skills in a logical progression, allowing participants to swim and play safely in and around the water. Participants, with 1:1 instruction, will be individually assessed of their swimming skills, and instructors will create weekly lessons to work with each child on water safety and swimming skills. They will also learn social skills during partner activities with classmates and group games. CAA classes are grouped according to age to facilitate the socialization benefits of class. Typically, you can expect the 3-5 year old class to cover preschool-level 1. Levels 1-4 will be typical for the 6-9 year olds. For the 10-16 year olds, most will be around levels 2-6.  If the class your child should be in is full, please email the Adapted Recreational Sports office to see if another class may be an appropriate substitute.

Evolutional Swimming (Ages 3 and up)
Evolutional Swimming is an inclusive transition class between Children's Adapted Aquatics (CAA) and Age Group and Camps Learn-to-Swim. A Children's Adapted Aquatics instructor will teach this group class within the Learn-to-Swim class setting. For the first six sessions, Evolutional Swimmers will be with their own separate class of four to six children. During the last week of programs, Evolutional Swimmers will join with the equivalent level Learn-to-Swim class. Participants must meet certain criteria to be in this class; thus, it is invitational only for previous quarter CAA participants. Children must be able to participate in a group setting, able to listen to instruction and attempt skills, and be able to participate in a class without one-on-one attention. After completion of this transition class, children will be prepared to participate in Learn-to-Swim at their designated level.
