Sportsmanship Rules
Note: The following are the minimum consequences for the offenses noted. Punishments can be more severe and are at the discretion of the intramural office.
- Bench swearing/Swearing = Yellow Card
- Swearing at the Official/Scorekeeper = Yellow Card
- Thrown punch = Red Card
- Running onto the field/ court, Bench Clearing (for a fight) = Yellow Card
- Pushing = Yellow Card
- Contacting the Official = Red Card; Gone for year
- Dunking(during pre-game) = Yellow Card
- Undercutting = Yellow Card
- Intoxication = Red Card & must meet with Assistant Director to determine further eligibility
- Tackling = Red Card & Unsportsmanlike Conduct
- Taunting = Warning to both teams; then Yellow Card
- Fans Misconduct (bench area) = Warning to captain; then Yellow Card to captain
(out of bench area) = Warning; Ejection
New: An individual receiving yellow card(s) in consecutive games will face possible suspension (depending on severity of infractions) from competition in the next scheduled contest, and placed on probation for the remainder of the sport’s season.
Sportmanship Grades
"A" - Excellent Conduct and Sportsmanship: Players cooperate fully with the officials and opposing team members. If necessary, the captain converses calmly with officials about rule interpretations and calls. (4 Points)
"B" - Good Conduct and Sportsmanship: Team members verbally complain about some decisions made by the officials and/or show minor dissension, which may or may not merit a Yellow Card. Teams that receive one Yellow Card will receive no higher than a "B" rating. (3 Points)
"C" - Average Conduct and Sportsmanship: Team makes some comments to the officials and/or the opposing team from the field/court and/or sidelines throughout the contest. The team captain exhibits minimal control over teammates or him/herself. Teams that receive one Red Card or two Yellow Cards will receive no higher than a "C" rating. (2 Points)
"D" - Below Average Conduct and Sportsmanship: Team constantly comments to the officials and/or the opposing team from the field/court and/or sidelines throughout the contest. The team captain exhibits little or no control over teammates or him/herself. Teams that receive the equivalent of three Yellow Cards (one Red Card and one Yellow Card together) will receive no higher than a "D" rating. (1 Point)
"E" - Poor Conduct and Sportsmanship: Team is completely uncooperative. Captain has no control over teammates and/or him/herself. Any team causing a game to be forfeited, other than by not showing, or any team that receives multiple Red Cards may receive an "E" rating. (0 Points)
** Any team that receives an "E" rating must have their team captain meet with the Assistant Director and GAA’s the following day to determine their team’s eligibility to play their next contest.
