DESCRIPTION:Cost: Free\nAdmission: \nOn this trip\, First-Year students wi
ll focus on developing the basic skills necessary to live out of a sea ka
yak and navigate between islands in a marine environment. Skill progressi
on\, equipment selection\, terminology\, and potential risks are all intr
oduced as foundational skills for sea kayaking. Camp on island and coastl
ines\, paddle alongside sand dunes\, and take in the beauty of Lake Super
ior. Student leaders will provide guidance throughout this experiential a
nd field-based excursion. This trip is challenging\, yet appropriate for
both novice and more experienced sea-kayakers looking for a backcountry e
xperience. At the end of the trip\, first year students who have elected
to be an \;OWL \;(all Wilderness Welcome participants are encoura
ged to be OWLs*) will move-in early (August 16) and can safely store thei
r residence hall items at the OAC for the duration of the trip. OAC staff
will assist in the move-in process on August 16 so a participant&rsquo\;
s family only needs to make one trip to campus. This trip is also availab
le for one academic credit hour. More information can be found \;here

r by June 30 can: \;return home on August 15 and move in on the norma
l move-in day\, August 18 \;or pay Residence Life for early move-in (
typically $40/day).\nThis is a backcountry trip: \;Participants on th
is trip will sleep in tents and there will be no access to showers\, runn
ing water or other modern amenities. Trip leaders will teach participants
how to dispose of waste properly by following Leave No Trace ethics.&nbs
