Welcome Week 2017

Welcome Week 2017

It is that time of the year again! Join us for welcome week events brough to you for FREE! Below are the list of events descriptions.

Sunday, August 20:

Battleship and Logrolling
  • Time: 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Location: RPAC Aquatic Recreation Natatorium
  • Pre-Registration: None

Event Description:

Battleship: Each team shall consist of four players (male or female) in the canoe, no more and no less. A game is won when a team completely eliminates all of the other teams by sinking their canoes. Each team will be provided a canoe and four buckets.

This event takes place in shallow water, so no swimming experience is necessary.  Wear your swim suit and bring a towel! Participation REQUIRES valid BuckIDs.

Logrolling:In the late 1800’s America was growing and lumber was needed to build our cities.  Logs were cut from remote areas without roads and floated down rivers to local sawmill towns.  The logs often jammed in the rivers, so men were hired to walk up and down the river on the spinning logs to clear the jams.  Fast forward to 2017 - now YOU can show off your balance and log rolling skills in this fun and exciting throwback to a time that Mark Twain called the “Gilded Age”.

Show up for the one hour session that fits best into your schedule.  Sessions begin at 11 a.m., 12 p.m. or 1 p.m.  Each log rolling session will offer 30 minutes of training and technique practice, followed by a bracket of fierce log rolling competition with the winners moving on to a final championship roll at 1:50 p.m. No previous experience is necessary.  This event takes place in shallow water, so no swimming experience is necessary.  Wear your swim suit and bring a towel! Participation REQUIRES valid BuckIDs.

Disc Golf Tournament
  • Time: 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Location: Fred Beekman Park
  • Pre-Registration: None

Event Description: Disc Golf is a flying disc game, as well as a precision and accuracy sport, in which individual players throw a flying disc at a target. Disc golf is similar to regular golf; however, instead of using golf clubs and balls aiming for a hole, Disc Golf players use golf discs and aim for a Disc Pole Hole, a pole extending up from the ground with chains and a basket where the disc lands. The object of the game is to complete each hole in the fewest number of throws, starting from a tee area and finishing at the Disc Pole Hole.

Registration will be held at the entrance of Jesse Owens West Recreation Center

Spikeball Tournament
  • Time: 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Location: Lincoln Tower Park grass fields
  • Pre-Registration: None

Event Description: Spikeball is played with two teams with only two players on each team. The objective of the game is to bounce the ball across the trampoline-like structure to your opponents. Similarly to volleyball, teams may use up to 3 hits in order to return the ball off of the trampoline netting. Inversely, teams are not restricted to one side of the net: the playing surface is 360 degrees, and both teams may move freely around the trampoline. When your opponent is unable to return the ball of the trampoline netting, a point is scored. A score of 21 is needed to win the game.

This FREE event involves pool play with the top teams from each pool advancing into a single elimination playoff bracket. Each team is guaranteed at least two (2) games. Champions of the tournament will receive PRIZES.

Valid BuckIDs are REQUIRED to participate.
