There are many benefits of physical activity and research shows it can help improve academic achievement. The Ohio State Center for the Study of Student Life found the mean cumulative GPA for undergraduate Rec Sport users was 3.23 and 3.07 for nonusers. (CSSL, 2018)

Six indoor Rec Sports facilities are located conveniently throughout campus with a wide range of operating hours and amenities. Outdoor facility spaces offer a chance to be active while in key facilities near the residence halls and central campus  

RPAC (Recreation and Physical Activity Center), central campus: 
  • Twelve multipurpose wood courts for basketball, volleyball and badminton 
  • Four squash courts 
  • Ten racquetball courts 
  • Four-lane jogging track 
  • Five multi-purpose rooms  
  • Lap pool, class pool, leisure pool and spa 

Bike Hub (located on the northwest corner of the RPAC) 

  • Open to all Rec Sports members 
  • Attend educational sessions around bike maintenance, cycling skills and bike safety 
  • Purchase parts and supplies 
  • Bike repairs and safety checks available 

Sport Shop, located on the ground floor of the RPAC

  • Check out equipment 
  • Purchase drinks 
  • Towel service, locks and locker rentals 
  • Reserve courts 


NRC (North Recreation Center), north campus: 
  • Four multi-purpose rooms 
  • Three floors of fitness equipment 
  • Four outdoor basketball courts

JON (Jesse Owens North), north campus:

ARC (Adventure Recreation Center), west campus:

OAC (Outdoor Adventure Center), located in the ARC on west campus: 
  • Thirty-five-foot-tall climbing structure

  • Backcountry trips (Rafting, kayaking, backpacking, climbing) 
  • Teambuilding

Do you like adventure? Wilderness trips? The Wilderness Welcome trips occur the weeks before move-in and are only open to first-year and new transfer students, all experience levels. The trip options include: 

  • Sea kayaking on Lake Superior 
  • Rock climbing at Red River Gorge 
  • Backpacking in Dolly Sods, WV 
  • Whitewater rafting in Ohiopyle, PA 
  • Hiking, riding, canoeing and ziplining in Hocking Hills

Interested in becoming a group fitness instructor? All new fitness instructors go through the BuckeyeFIT program, a free, year-long program to prepare you to be an instructor. You can submit your application for 2020-2021 here.
