Safety Trainings and Certification

The Department of Recreational Sports offers American Red Cross Safety Training Courses for students, staff and the general public. These trainings provide the skills necessary to create a safe school, work and home environment. Our instructors have over 50 years of combined teaching experience. 

Rec Sports offer the 2012 editions of American Red Cross Certifications in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Standard First Aid and lifeguarding.

Refund Policy
You may cancel up to two weeks before the start of the class. Cancellations and refund requests must be made in writing to the program director at least two weeks prior to the start of the class and you will receive a refund, less the $30 administrative fee ($10 for CPR/AED and/or First Aid classes). After that deadline, you will not be eligible to receive a refund. Individuals who do not pass prerequisite skills will not be eligible for a refund.

Registration Summer 2017

Student Life’s Department of Recreational Sports is switching to a new member management system in early May.  This system allows our members and the community to sign up for programs including Camp Recky, Learn to Swim and Outdoor Adventure Trips. The online system for signing up for these programs is changing during this process. Online program registration will not be available April 27-May 8, 2017.

You can register for safety training classes  through our new system starting on Tuesday, May 9.


 
CPR Pro and First Aid Courses

This class instructs participants in CPR/AED, rescue breathing, obstructed airway, choking care, severe bleeding, injuries to muscles, bones and joints, sudden illnesses, environmental emergencies and burn care. All skills are taught for adult, child and infant care. New CPR/AED materials and pocket masks are provided to participants by the instructor. 

Length of class: 6 hours

Cost: Member: $115; Non-Members: $125

This class instructs participants in Basic First Aid, including: severe bleeding, injuries to muscles, bones and joints, sudden illnesses, environmental emergencies and burn care. All skills are taught for adult, child and infant care. New First Aid materials will be provided to participants by the instructor.

CPR Review Course

Successful completion of this class will renew certifications for individuals who possess a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification. This class is not intended to re-teach skills; rather it is designed to refresh the main points of the course and test participants' knowledge and skill set.

Prerequisite: Proof of current CPR/AED-PR certification.

Lifeguard Training - New

This training teaches the skills necessary to guard at an aquatic facility. Successful participants will receive CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguarding and First Aid Training certifications. Students must attend all classes in order to receive the certifications. Participants must complete the Lifeguarding Training Prerequisites on the first day of class. The Course Fact Sheet is located at the top of this page.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of the Lifeguard Training Prerequisite

Length of class: ~26 hours total

Lifeguard Instructor Training

This course prepares instructor candidates to use course and presentation materials, conduct training sessions and evaluate the progress of candidates in a professional-level course. Once authorized, Lifeguard Instructors may teach:

  • Waterpark Lifeguarding
  • Shallow Water Attendant
  • Lifeguard Management
  • CPR/AED for Lifeguards
  • Administering Emergency Oxygen
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission

  • GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow
  • Water Safety presentations

Prerequisites: Be at least 17-years of age on or before the last day of the instructor course.  Successfully complete the pre-course session. This includes passing the pre-course written exam with a score of 80% or higher for each of three sections and demonstrating competency in the pre-course skills and scenario evaluation. Skills include but are not limited to entries, approaches, rescues and after-care.

Lifeguard Training - Review

This training teaches the skills necessary to guard at an aquatic facility. Water Safety Instructor

Includes Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) The WSI course provides instructor candidates the necessary skills to teach the American Red Cross (ARC) Parent and Child Program, 3 levels of Preschool Aquatics, 6 levels of the Learn-to-Swim program, Longfellows Whales Tales and Basic Water Rescue. All ARC instructor candidates must take FIT. Attendance is required at all sessions (no exceptions.) This is the required certification for swim instructors at all Dublin Community Pools.

Prerequisites: 1. Minimum age of 16 at the end of the class (proof of age must be brought to the first class). 2. Successfully complete 25 yards of the following six strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and butterfly. Demonstrate ability to float and tread water.

Cost: Members: $180; Non-Members: $225

Certified Pool Operator Course

CPO® certification courses are designed to provide individuals with the basic knowledge, techniques and skills of pool and spa operations. The Certified Pool/Spa Operator® certification program has delivered more training than any other program in the pool and spa industry since 1972.

The CPO® certification program requires participation in a two-day class (14-16 hours) taught by a certified instructor. The CPO® certification program includes pool and spa chemistry, testing, treatment, filtration, maintenance, automatic feeding equipment and government requirements.  The CPO® certification is valid for five years.

Length of Class (Fusion): ~8 Hours. 

With the Fusion course, an online portion must be completed before you arrive. Approximate time of this online course is seven hours. You will receive information on how to access the online course once you register.

Scuba

This course prepares candidates to become certified divers. It is two-thirds of the certification process (classroom, pool/confined water training dives and open water training dives). This course just fulfills the requirements for classroom and pool/confined water training, not the open water training dives; completion of this course alone WILL NOT certify you in scuba.
