Unified Basketball Tournament

Unified Sports: “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.“

In an effort to increase the diversity and inclusion of our Rec Sports programs, specifically within Competitive Sports, we decided to incorporate Unified Sports within our intramural programs at The Ohio State University.  By partnering with Special Olympics Ohio, Student Life Rec Sports was able to offer opportunities for students and athletes to come together on co-ed basketball teams to play for their chance to represent Ohio State at the NIRSA National Basketball Tournament hosted here.

Games started on January 22 and the league ran similarly other intramural sports with 3 weeks of regular season play followed by 3 weeks of playoffs. We had a total of 32 Ohio State students and 32 Special Olympic Athletes sign up for the Inaugural Unified Basketball League. The championship night will be on March 5 at 5:30 p.m.; there we will see what team will go on to represent Ohio State at the NIRSA National Basketball Tournament in April.  Overall, the league has been a huge success and weare excited to see what other sports programs we will be offering in the future.
